Liturgy, Worship and the Arts for Students

The schools of the Boston Theological Institute individually support the arts in a variety of ways with occasional collaborative programming. Students in the BTI School are encouraged to participate in activities designed to be sensitive and supportive of various identities.
Examples of activities within the consortium include the following:

 

I. Programs in the Schools and Affiliations

Andover Newton Program in Worship, Theology and the Arts
Andover Newton offers a Master of Arts Degree in Theology and the Arts. The program takes at least four semesters of regular study, and at least one summer session of Andover Newton's Institute for Theology and the Arts (a total of 48 credits). See: http://www.ants.edu/wota/

Boston College 
Boston College's McMullen Museum of Art serves as a dynamic educational resource for all of New England as well as the national and the international community. The Museum displays its notable permanent collection and mounts exhibitions of scholarly importance from all periods and cultures of the history of art. The Museum is free and open to the public and free parking is available. The Department of Fine Arts also gives leadership to the arts community in the BTI schools together with the interests of Department of Theology faculty. Boston University
The School of Visual Arts in the College of Fine Arts, established in 1954 as a professional training school at Boston University, offers leadership to the arts community in Boston. See their website: See: http://www.bu.edu/cfa/about/

  • See also Master of Sacred Music (MSM) Program in the School of Theology, at the forefront of professional training in sacred music. Students are prepared for leadership roles in communities of faith, and as performers, scholars, and teachers using the incomparable resources of the Boston University School of Music and School of Theology.
  • Other resources include: the headquarters of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, the editorial office of Studia Liturgica (the journal of the international and ecumenical Societas Liturgica), the AGO organ library, and one of the finest hymnological collections in North America.

Episcopal Divinity School
Work in Liturgy, Worship and the Arts is of interest to different faculty. (Consult the EDS catalogue.) The Episcopal Divinity School – Lesley University Library offers space for exhibitions. See: www.eds.edu 

Gordon College 
Although not a BTI school, through its affiliation with Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and association with Christians in the Visual Arts (CIVA), the Gordon College Art Department and Gordon’s Fine Arts Center have given leadership to Christianity and the Arts in the Greater Boston area. Harvard Divinity School and University

Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology
Work in Liturgy, Worship and the Arts is of interest to different faculty. (Consult the HCHC catalogue.) See the Archbishop Iakovos Library and Learning Resource Center of Hellenic College/ Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. The facility serves the school and the greater academic and religious community by supporting the curricula of the undergraduate college and the master’s level theological seminary programs and by offering research materials for scholarly work. II. Faculty Colloquium in Liturgy and Worship

A BTI faculty colloquium in Liturgy and Worship meets periodically. (See Faculty Colloquia on this website.) Individual faculty members are associated with their respective denominations as well as with such organizations as:

  • Societas Liturgica, an international society for liturgical study and renewal. (See: http://www.societas-liturgica.org/)
  • The English Language Liturgical Consultation (ELLC) was formally established In Boston in 1985. (Preceded by the International Consultation on English Texts [ICET], a group convened in 1969 by the International Commission on English in the Liturgy [ICEL], in conjunction with the [North American] Consultation on Common Texts [CCT] and the Joint Liturgical Group [JLG] of Great Britain, with JLG and ICEL providing the co-chairs.)
